2022-03-29
2022-01-0884
Tire tread pattern noise is a major source of road noise generated by motor vehicles. Recently, noise control technology has been developing, and low-noise motor vehicles, such as electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, have been commercialized. The importance of low-noise tires has increased since regulations R117 for tire noise and R51.03 for motor vehicle noise have been strengthened. To evaluate the tire noise in the development stage of motor vehicles, finished products of tires are required; hence, financial and time costs should be invested. Therefore, it is highly useful to predict tire noise levels in the early stages. Recently, a technology to predict the tire pattern noise using a supervised training method of artificial neural network (ANN) has been developed. The tire tread depth is estimated using the shading of the full image of the actual tire, and the leading edge of the contact patch is calculated using tire contact patch images.

Progressive Meta-Model Based Design Optimization for Lithium-ion Battery Pack to Improve Cell Cycle Life

2023-04-11
2023-01-0512
Lithium-ion battery has advantages of high energy density and cost effectiveness than other types of batteries. However due to the low mechanical stability, their performance is strongly influenced by environmental conditions. Especially, external pressure on a cell surface is a crucial factor because an appropriate force can improve battery cycle life, but excessive force may cause structural failure. In addition, battery pack is composed of various components so that uncertainties in dimension and material properties of each component can cause a wide variance in initial pressure. Therefore, it is important to optimize structural design of battery pack to ensure initial pressure in an effective range. In this paper, target stiffness of module structure was determined based on cell level cycle life test, then structural design has been optimized for weight reduction. Cell cycling tests were performed under different stiffness conditions and analyzed with regression model.

Bad weather conditions such as torrential rain, heavy snow, and thick fog frequently occur worldwide. Vehicle accidents in such bad weather conditions account for a significant portion of all vehicle accidents, and the level of damage is relatively severe compared to other accidents that occur in clear weather. This paper analyzes the driver's driving stability in bad weather conditions, which has such a significant meaning, in various ways through experiments on the inconvenience experienced by the driver. In this study, three levels of bad weather conditions were implemented in a driving simulator environment to evaluate driver inconvenience for six activities. Through driving experiment, quantitative bio-signals and vehicle signals were analyzed in each weather condition. The SD survey was used to assess the driver's inconvenience level for activities performed while driving and analyze the ranking of inconvenience.

Development of Truck Platooning System Including Emergency Braking Function with Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) Testing

2023-04-11
2023-01-0571
Platoon is a system that connects vehicles through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology to maintain a short distance between vehicles while driving on the road. To improve fuel efficiency, many automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are interested in developing and demonstrating real-world platoon system. However, it is hard for heavy duty trucks to develop this system due to the difficulty of maintaining the targeted intervehicle distance not only for fuel efficiency but also for safety in case of emergency braking. Because of this critical safety issue in the emergency situation, the platoon system for heavy duty trucks can be hardly demonstrated or tested in real vehicle environment. The relatively complex system and the slow response characteristic of commercial vehicles makes this even more difficult.

Customer Complaints Analysis Using Textmining Method

2022-03-29
2022-01-0131
In recent years, the automobile industry has been making efforts to develop vehicles that satisfy customers' emotions rather than malfunctions. The Vehicle Dependability Study(VDS) has been strengthened emotion items since the introduction of the new evaluation system VDS3 from 2015. The ratio of emotion items increased from 11% to 25%. In order to clarify the problem and cause of emotion items, we analyzed verbatim which is the customers' complaint data provided by J.D power every year, but it was difficult to extract customers' intention because the number of verbatim is small and expressed in terms of customer’s term rather than engineer’s term. To solve the problem, we are additionally colleting big data such as internet, warranty, online survey. Since the amount of data is very large, we developed textmining techniques such as dictionary, topic, Support Vector Machine(SVM), n-gram to improve process.

Measuring the Displacement of a Vehicle Body with an Optical Measuring System (Motion Capture)

2019-04-02
2019-01-0393
The 3D measurement of a body displacement on a moving vehicle is a quite challenging process. Well-known displacement measuring device such as a dial gauge and strain gauge can measure the displacement in only limited areas. An accelerometer also can estimate body motion but it has an accumulated error and a bias issue for an acquisition of displacements. However, an optical measuring (Motion Capture) method which uses markers and multiple cameras can read 3D coordinates directly and carry out those measurements well. In this paper, first, we determined how to extract a body displacement from global motion. Then we suggested a combining measurement methodology which uses a motion capture and an accelerometer simultaneously. Though it has failed to compensate each result and exact displacement, we showed an accuracy comparison between a motion capture and an accelerometer to measure a displacement along this process.

Reinforcement of Low-Frequency Sound by Using a Panel Speaker Attached to the Roof Panel of a Passenger Car

2020-09-30
2020-01-1570
The woofer in a car should be large to cover the low frequencies, so it is heavy and needs an ample space to be installed in a passenger car. The geometry of the woofer should conform to the limited available space and layout in general. In many cases, the passengers feel that the low-frequency contents are not satisfactory although the speaker specification covers the low frequencies. In this work, a thin panel is installed between the roof liner and the roof panel, and it is used as the woofer. The vibration field is controlled by many small actuators to create the speaker and baffle zones to avoid the sound distortion due to the modal interaction. The generation of speaker and baffle zones follows the inverse vibro-acoustic rendering technique. In the actual implementation, a thin acrylic plate of 0.53x0.2 m2 is used as the radiator panel, and the control actuator array is composed of 16 moving-coil actuators.

2000-01-0451
The electric power system of a modern vehicle has to supply enough electrical energy to numerous electrical and electronic systems. The electric power system of a vehicle consists of two major components: a generator and a battery. A detailed understanding of the characteristics of the electric power system, electrical load demands, and the driving environment such as road, season, and vehicle weight are required when the capacities of the generator and the battery are to be determined for a vehicle. In order to avoid the over/under design problem of the electric power system, an easy-to-use and inexpensive simulation program may be needed. In this study, a vehicle electric power simulator is developed. The simulator can be utilized to determine the optimized capacities of generators and batteries appropriately. To improve the flexibility and easy usage of the simulation program, the program is organized in modular structures, and is run on a PC.

2018-04-03
2018-01-1459
Hyundai's new engine is developed which optimize the cooling efficiency for knocking improvement and friction reduction. The cooling concepts for this purpose are 1) equalizing the temperature among cylinders by flow optimization, 2) cooling the required area intensively, 3) adopting ‘active flow control’ and 4) enlarging fuel economy at high speed range. In order to realize the cooling concept, 1) cross-flow, 2) compact water jacket & exhaust cooling, 3) flow control valve and 4) cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold are considered. Improvement of knocking and friction reduction by increased cooling water temperature makes fuel efficiency possible. On the other hand, in order to strengthen the cooling around the combustion chamber and to reduce the deviation among the combustion chamber of cylinders, it is required to design the head water jacket shape accordingly.

Improvement of Tire Development Process Through Study of Tire Test Procedure and Vehicle Correlation

2018-04-03
2018-01-1337
The tire is the vital element in vehicle dynamics, as its contact patch transmits all forces and moments to the ground (accelerating, braking, cornering, rolling).Over the recent decades tire development for passenger cars has been continuously improved and optimized in order to achieve a good overall vehicle performance in R&H that is in balance with all other tire performances (Wear, Durability, NVH, RR, Miles). This general development process has to be suitable for various vehicle types from regular passenger cars over eco-friendly hybrid or electric vehicles to high performance sport cars. The balance between Ride and Handling performance is further adjusted to local customer preferences that are usually distinguished by markets (US, EU, Asia). The tire development process, which is embedded in the overall vehicle development, is usually realized in a mutual collaboration between OEM and tire supplier.

2018-01-1561
The mass producible broad-band ANC system for road noise is developed with fully digital control system. For this configuration, installation packages are intensively considered by minimizing size of the controller, simplifying wiring system and implementing virtual microphone techniques. Virtual microphone technique enables error microphone to be installed in remote position of driver’s ear, and therefore, increases installation degree of freedom significantly. To enhance noise control performance with the minimum latency, filter design of FxLMS algorithm is optimized while additional audio compensation techniques are applied to maintain audio performance of amplifier. The present ANC system is equipped to HMC (Hyundai Motor Company) new release of hydrogen driven vehicle, which is introduced in the technology promotion event in Pyeongchang Olympic 2018.

Assessing Panel Noise Contribution of a Car Engine Using Particle Velocity Sensors

2015-06-15
2015-01-2248
In order to apply an effective noise reduction treatment determining the contribution of different engine components to the total sound perceived inside the cabin is important. Although accelerometer or laser based vibration tests are usually performed, the sound contributions are not always captured accurately with such approaches. Microphone based methods are strongly influenced by the many reflections and other sound sources inside the engine bay. Recently, it has been shown that engine radiation can be effectively measured using microphones combined with particle velocity sensors while the engine remains mounted in the car [6]. Similar results were obtained as with a dismounted engine in an anechoic room. This paper focusses on the measurement of the transfer path from the engine to the vehicle interior in order to calculate the sound pressure contribution of individual engine sections at the listener's position.

Design Optimization of Alternator and Battery Systems with a Recuperation Control Algorithm for a Mid-Sized Sedan

2015-04-14
2015-01-1188
The fuel economy of a vehicle can be improved by recuperating the kinetic energy when the vehicle is decelerated. However, if there is no electrical traction component, the recuperated energy can be used only by the other electrical systems of the vehicle. Thus, the fuel economy improvement can be maximized by balancing the recuperated energy and the consumed energy. Also, suitable alternator and battery management is required to maximize the fuel economy. This paper describes a design optimization process of the alternator and battery system equipped with recuperation control algorithms for a mid-sized sedan based on the fuel economy and system cost. A vehicle model using AVL Cruise is developed for cycle simulations and validated with experimental data. The validated model is used for the parametric study and design optimization of the alternator and battery systems with single and dual energy storage.

Development of Surfactant-Free Anti-Fogging Coating for Automotive Headlamps

2019-03-25
2019-01-1439
Recently, the design of automotive headlamps has become diversified and complicated according to customer needs. Hence, structural complexity of the headlamps has also increased. Complex structure of the headlamps inevitably causes a disturbance in air circulation. For this reason, inadvertent micro-sized water droplets, called fogging, are condensed on the inner surface of headlamp lens due to temperature difference between the inner and outer lens surfaces. To circumvent fogging inside of the headlamp lens, an anti-fogging coating is indispensable. Conventionally, diverse surfactants have been adopted as substantial material for the anti-fogging coating. However, the usage of the surfactants causes undesirable side effect such as water mark arising from vapor condensation, which is an important issue that must be fully resolved. In this study, we developed an innovative anti-fogging coating material without using conventional surfactant.

Robust Control of Commercial Vehicle’s Speed Using Disturbance Observer

2021-04-06
2021-01-0966
This paper proposes a speed controller using a disturbance observer to regulate the speed of a commercial vehicles, and presents vehicle test results to evaluate the performance of the proposed controller. Most ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) and automated driving systems need to reliably regulate the vehicle's speed under any circumstances. A conventional PID controller is commonly used to control the vehicle speed, but performance of it varies depending on changes in external conditions. Commercial vehicles are even more susceptible to these changes than passenger cars and more difficult to obtain an accurate plant model. Considering these features, a speed controller using a disturbance observer is designed for commercial vehicles. The proposed controller treats changes in external conditions as disturbances. The modeling uncertainty is also treated as a disturbance.

2021-04-06
2021-01-0360
To meet the indoor air quality guideline of newly manufactured vehicles in Korea, China, and other countries, low formaldehyde grade POM (Polyoxymethylene) is used for interior parts essentially. In this paper, formaldehyde scavengers from of 2 commercial low formaldehyde grade POM pellets were identified by LC-MS (Liquid chromatograph-Mass spectrometer) as sebacic dihydrazide and dodecanedioic dihydrazide respectively. The reaction products between formaldehyde and formaldehyde scavengers were also detected, which were converted from hydrazide to hydrazone. So, this kind of additive would be gradually consumed by repetitive molding process or exposure to heat according to formaldehyde emission increase. We are expecting to apply this analytical method and result for quality control and benchmark of low formaldehyde grade POM.
